Governexx – I share, therefore I am

Today I had a unique opportunity. I was asked to speak at a one day leadership conference called Governexx. These are young federal government employees and providing a forum to inspire. What was unique about today is that I got to do a (Chitter Chatter) Pecha Kucha presentation. This is where you have to get your point across in 20 slides and each slide for 20 seconds. This is a real challenge because the slides are timed so it is out of your control. Here is a link to it if you would like to read more about the process –

I spoke today about ‘Discovering the Extraordinary in the Ordinary’. This is a signature speech I have given in the past but never in an environment like this. I am used to 8 bullet points and an hour worth of time to speak. The TEDxSFU speech I gave last year was a challenge to incorporate my thoughts into 15 minutes. This time, it was 6+ minutes. I wanted to practice so as I spoke, the slide transition would work into a flow with what I had to say. I was also provided the first spot so part of me was glad to get it out of the way. I felt that the message I needed to share was that no matter what environment you work in, you can try to be creative, look for opportunities and build on your autobiography. It is important to remember that we are all building stories so I had to throw in – “Everyone’s life is an autobiography…make yours worth reading.”

It was great to see Lauren (one of the lead organizers and worked very hard) and Lien (who put my name forward). It makes my day when I see you both. After I finished, I had positive feedback so I am glad that it seemed to have hit its intended objective and I can say that I have been able to do a Pecha Kucha and TEDx talk. What is next? It seems that I keep trying to find challenging speaking opportunities…but there are important messages to be shared. There was very little that was ordinary today but a lot that was extraordinary…thank you for a great day.
