I have said that I see my 50/50-2012 as an unbalanced scale…more joys and happiness over despair and pain…well, the scale tipped to pain today…all because of a terrible sneeze.
I have had a history of back pain from osteoarthritis. No, this does not come at the outset of 50 years old so no one should panic. I have had this since I was in my 20’s and rarely does my back go out terribly. On any given day, I am about a 2-3 on the pain scale and it has just become part of my life and you just cope with it. It is not that bad. Every so often, the back acts up and it gets around a 5-6 on the pain scale. On the very rare occasion it gets to a 9.5 and that is where the problem lies. Fortunately, I have been told I have a high tolerance for pain.
This morning, I could sense it and all of a sudden, I picked up Ishaan and it snapped. I knew this was not good but still I could manage. It was a flash and I was about 7 out of 10. Only a few minutes later, I sneezed and that was it, it jumped to 9.5 and I could not stand or move. This was not an unusual sneeze, I think it was just that my back was in a situation and this just threw it out further. I managed to stand and walk a few steps and rest along the counter. Getting to the couch was a marathon but I got to it and crumpled into a heap…the problem with this is that you have to get up eventually and anytime you try and get up, I felt like that turtle on its back…you try and try and hopefully you can get up.
Are there any positives from all this? Well, I was off today and I shudder to think what would have happened if this would have happened at work. I have been able to clear my schedule over the next few days to try and recoup. Also, my wife Sadhna had to look after three kids today. She has been very helpful and for that I am grateful. The pain has subsided to a 9 out of 10 so I hope it is progressing along.
I hope that this post does not make the top 50 list for my 50/50-2012. This is not something that should be memorable at the year end, but it was significant enough for my day today to make sure I wrote about it. Lets hope there are no more sneezes in my day!
