Getting a Legge up by speaking to no ordinary Joe

There are some iconic Vancouverites and I got to see two of them today at the BC Business Top 100 event. Peter Legge was in conversation with Joe Segal. It was an event that saw both philanthropic individuals addressing a crowd of about 1,000. Joe Segal was honoured and Peter Legge had the honour of asking the questions. What I want to say about Peter is that I greatly enjoy hearing his captivating voice and the amazing work he has done for Vancouver. It is no wonder that he has been recognized many times over as a phenomenal speaker. Joe Segal on the other hand is one of those people who should have a fire place behind him, while everyone just sits on the floor to listen to his stories. Joe is someone who has shaped and defined the retail industry regionally and nationally…both these men are storytellers and pillars of Vancouver.

For me, turning 50 is about sharing life lessons and Joe Segal certainly spoke about many of the aspects that I have embraced in my journey. Peter shared how he had visited Joe many times in the early days and tried to sell him ad space and after 6 visits over 6 months, Joe never bought ad space. The reason – Peter kept trying to sell him what Peter thought was appropriate; however, as Joe pointed out…you never asked me what I wanted? Makes sense to me. The message here was to make sure you listen to the people you interact with. We may think we know what is important, but you need to ask them what is important to them…and often times we don’t ask what is important to the other person.

Other life lessons shared today?!
• Always remember the people who helped you along the way. It does not take much to touch base and tell them what they mean.
• You must believe in what you are doing. It is much easier to go to work when you are engaged in what you do. If you believe in it, so will those around you.
• Relationships are very important. If you treat people with respect and understanding, they will go out of their way to help…even when you don’t ask for it.
• There is so much pleasure in helping others. This is more about being present, willing and able to help others in need. It is genuine and enjoyable.
• Tolerance and understanding is critical. The world has many challenges and conflicts but if we try to just be more accepting, there is much that could be resolved.
• If you have a lot, it might only mean a little; however, if you have little, it might mean a lot

Today was a valuable reminder by someone who is authentic and genuine. I have used these words before and they keep reappearing throughout the year by some of the most amazing individuals. We sometimes attend events like today and feel that we have heard the gospel but in reality, it is common sense. We need to have these reminders. All I will say about today is that listening to Joe, I felt that the life I have chosen, is in line with what was said today. Joe did say that turning 50, you might think you have reached half life…in reality, most will have about 80 years so that means you are 5/8th of the way through your life…OK, the remainder is continued quality of time with people, situations and adventures…that is my commitment.
