Letter Writing is Alive and Well

While I just posted about a pedestrian knock down and how it brought back many memories for me. To balance the scales, I need to also write about a letter I received today…yes, I said letter (not email). It came from England and my lovely friends June and Keith.

I met them both about 14 years ago and it was totally random. Keith came up to me asking directions and I wound up driving them both there and back so they could see the sights. Rather than pointing them in the right direction, I thought it best to take them to Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge. Now it was a total trust issue but more from their side as they were in a foreign country and got into my car. After that, we have become life long friends. June wrote me a thank you card and instead of just leaving it, I wrote her back and then it just started going back and forth. Both of them are now in their 70’s/80’s and have a zest for life. June and Keith have had me stay at their house, given me tours of Bath, Bristol etc and they attended my graduation from the University of Exeter.

I have been writing letters for most of my life. My grandmother lived in England and she used to write to me and I would write her back. I also kept her letters so when she passed away, I still had her letters. I often go back and read them and find the significance and meaning of what she thought I was capable of.

A simple gesture of taking them to a destination resulted in an amazing friendship developing. Fortunately, we are both letter writers so we share and enjoy in the old world form of communication. When was the last time you wrote a letter to someone? Why not take a bit of time, write a letter and post it with a stamp…you would be amazed at how you can make someone’s day by just that action.

So true! Nobody writes letters anymore….. Food for thought for sure!

As far as I can remember, I have never really had the experience of writing letters (other than the official ones) to my friends or family. It just makes me wonder how much of the feelings, emotions and the very culture of letter writing have been modified/lost in this new technological world.
Time to write a letter to someone 🙂

Perfect, and don’t tell them and just write a nice meaningful letter and wait to hear back 🙂 You will make someone’s day.

So happy to be mentioned Sam, but then who could fail to take an immediate liking to someone like you? Never even thought that getting into your car would be risky and, look – see what a great friendship developed as a result!

I am so glad that the universe has brought up together. You have given many fond memories over the years and many more to come. Great to have you both as part of my family. I think what I enjoy the most is that when we are together, the many stories we share…we are all story tellers 🙂
