Learning to fly

Someone once said that if you are on the edge and you take a step into the darkness and unknown , you are either going to step on to something solid or be taught to fly. My interpretation of this is that if you have faith in yourself, you will succeed. Now there are probably going to be setbacks along the way; however, you will be alright. Unfortunately, most people will walk to the edge of the cliff, realize that they are unsure and step back and never realize what could have been.

Today I had the opportunity to catch up with my Leaders of Tomorrow Mentee, Meghan Dimma. To know the word passion, you then know Meghan. Today we talked about many things but there were a couple of things that were of importance. Meghan, because she has enthusiasm is a person that will have many opportunities come her way. Her concern was about how to sift through and make the most while not compromising her values and beliefs. Does she focus on the experience or does she look towards her passions? These were things on her mind today. I see this dilemma with many people who are trying to determine their path. Often times they are worried that if they take one path, does that prevent another direction for the future? How can I decide? One concept that I often share is that instead of concentrating on the direct path and career, instead, you need to focus on your core and determine what are the 3-5 things that make up who you are. It is not the job, company or career but rather, the 3-5 things that make up who you are. Once you know this, it helps you to figure out what direction you need to go. You see, the core becomes your compass. It is your foundation to help guide and determine your path. So be reflective and find the 3-5 things that are your core and then go out to find how your life and career builds around that. To build a house, you need a strong foundation, similarly, to build your life, you need a strong foundation.

So how does all this apply to Sam’s 50/50-2012? Why write about all this today? Well, it is about finding the extraordinary in the ordinary…in this case, there is nothing ordinary about Meghan ? I find that the writings here are to help others based on my daily experiences. I know that with Meghan, she is a person who will walk to the edge, with all her confidence, take a step and she will fly.
